It seems like this is one of those production books almost, but not quite written by an AI. I don’t say that to be negative, but the dialogue is kind of stilted, not smooth either. It’s a good book to read especially if you’ve read the first book. And I’ll keep reading the series because it seems very interesting. Jake Fox who is not know as Star Blade came from Earth by accident into a galaxy 3,000 years from his birth year. He did this by picking up a sword that had been dropped by Star Blade Kilian Drake after Drake was smashed dead by a Srack. That Star Blade had flung Jake Fox 3,000 years into the future to avoid him being killed by a Srack. The Srack were invading Earth under the command of Sotalorian Emperor, Cayn Vaguar XXVIII. He used the Srack as his shock troops to cleanse planets that he wanted for their resources or as breeding grounds for more Srack.
Anyway, Jake Fox had no idea how to use a sword of any kind, especially one that seemed to talk to him. He also found himself on another planet 3,000 years in the future but eventually was taken in by aliens that appeared to be human, but were not. They were impressed by the fact that Jake had a Star Blade even though he didn’t know how to use it. Viceroy Katrina Mar-talori, took a liking to Jake and instructed some of her military warriors to teach Jake what he needed to know. They did a very good job and soon Jake was appointed as a personal body guard to the Viceroy.
Jake found out that he was the last living Star Blade in the galaxy. He also found out that the Earth he left three-thousand years ago, had been turned into a waste land. The Sotalorians didn’t really know if there were any humans left on Earth and if there were, they must be hiding underground trying to stay away from the Srack hives that populated the planet. After helping Viceroy Mar-talori conquer another planet and saving her life, Jake said he wanted to return to Earth to see for himself how bad things were. The Viceroy didn’t really want him to go, but she reluctantly let him have a starship called Lucky. Jake takes off for Earth with several groups of aliens with him. Some appear to be human, others are humanoid, while others are just alien, but all are in support of Jake and understand his desire to see Earth. Most think this will be a short trip there and back because they fear that Earth won’t be a planet that can support humanity no matter who comes.
All this while, as I mentioned, Jake’s Star Blade sword, who’s called Sesusemon, has been telling Jake what it’s like to be a Star Blade warrior. He says there once were a lot of Star Blade warriors and they had formed an Order, but slowly died out from one thing or another. A star blade sword cannot be taken from its holder while that person still lives. That’s the only reason Jake was able to pick up Kilian Drake’s sword, but now it was his and no one could remove it while he was alive. One of the capabilities of the Star Blade was its ability to move its holder ahead in time. Jake found that he could project himself one, two or three seconds, minutes, hours into the future while every one else stayed fixed in time. He then could move to an advantages position and wait until time caught up and surprise his victim by standing behind them or even thrusting the sword through them while he was going through time. The only thing about this was that the sword could not move him back in time, just forward.
Jake has made friend with most of the beings he has on his ship, Lucky. The ship’s AI also takes to Jake and anyone on board so it could tell Jake where they were going and how long it would take them. The trip to Earth would take some time so everyone got to know each other a little better. There was one guy who was a spy for the Viceroy. He was there to ensure Jake did what was expected and that was to see Earth and return to the Viceroy’s services. Jake wasn’t sure he was going to do that but he kept that to himself. Their trip to Earth isn’t without some stops. They find some interesting asteroids floating in space, but these rocks seemed to have been modified with engines on one side which made them movable. Why they were made this way and by whom was a short adventure Jake and his group were to find out.
Well, Jake does eventually get to Earth. He’s found humans but you’ll have to read the story to find out how and what happened after that. While this book was interesting, the story isn’t over for Jake Fox. He’ll be doing other things in book 3, “Sword Masters”, now available on Amazon.
