Salvage Defense

Well, this has been a very strange series. If you notice that this is book 3 in the series, but the other two books were written by three authors. This one apparently was done by Mr. Kevin Steverson and it takes a completely different path than the previous two books. Very strange!

We previously were involved with Captain “Miggy” Morrison of the starship *Cabrillo*, a formerly ship belonging to the Democratic Republic of Forillda (PDRF) Navy. That country and Navy had been defeated in their ill-fated war. Capt. Morrison and his ship had spent most of that war in the Pakrewan System far away from all the action.

So, now that the ship doesn’t belong to anyone, Captain Morrison decided to find a buyer which he did. The new owner decided to use the ship in the Pakrewan System to hunt down pirates and provide some cargo transportation. With this arrangement, Captain Morrison and his crew would be handsomely paid and might earn enough to go back through the Bith Gate and return home.

Time went on the first two books and everything was kind of working smoothly. Then something or someone started attacking mining rigs out on the Pakrewan System outer rim. The only fighting ship of any kind in the system was the *Cabrillo* so it went into action. It found out that this was an attack by some kind of alien entity who appeared to be using living ships. Captain Morrison named them the “Seekers” and made a desperate stand for the system. Ultimately, these aliens proved too much for the *Cabrillo*. It had to flee through the Bith Gate to warn the other galactic systems of what was coming.

Captain Morrison and his badly damaged ship finally arrived at the Salvage System. The people there, mainly President Harmon Tomeral, had reviewed all the data provided by the *Cabrillo* and recognized Captain Michelangelo (Miggy) Morrison, as a hero to the galaxy. They silently gave Captain Morrison a military funeral. That is the very beginning of this third book. The main character and all other characters in the first two books have all died! I find that very strange.

Now it’s up to President Tomeral to gather all the human and alien species together and form a common defense against what they know is coming, thanks to Captain Morrison. They don’t know if they can stand against this foe.

It’s interesting to note that President Tomeral is also Commodore Tomeral and commands his own starship, the *Salvage Title*, the flagship of the Salvage fleet. He’s also aided by several AI’s, Jayneen, who seems to have taken on the role of a woman, but her programming was created by Clip, a human genius in artificial intelligence. These two, Jayneen and Clip worked together to create Bahroot, who seems to think Jayneen and Clip are his Mother and Father, respectively!

So now we’re going to find out if the Salvage System can meet and defeat the Seekers. The Seekers are vast in number and are heading to this arm of the galaxy, but not directly to the Salvage System initially. So, Commodore Harmon puts together a task force consisting of his flagship and several others and goes to the aid of those systems that will come under attack first.

That’s well and good because the other systems very much need the help. But, this doesn’t do much to stop the Seekers’ advance. What it does do is highlight to the Seekers that there might be a system that they need to attack and soon! So they change direction straight for the Salvage System!

Yet, space is vast and even at the speed the Seekers are traveling they will not reach the Salvage System for almost fourteen months. Time that President Tomeral must use to build a larger fleet and defense platforms and realistically plan for the evacuation of this entire civilian population. This won’t be an easy job.

It appears this is the end of the series. I kind of guess all three authors decided to quit writing and one went on to finish what they started. This book could stand on its own but it wasn’t that long. Maybe Mr. Kevin Steverson will write more books in the future.
