By now you know that Earth has been attacked by the Maxolhx and Earth is going to suffer in a big way if something isn’t done about it. A massive cloud of gas is heading towards the Sun and Earth which will eventually render a frozen ball of ice. Colonel Joe Bishop, commander of the *Valkyrie*, has been promoted to Brigadier General and is very angry at the galaxy as a whole and especially at the Maxolhx. He has vowed to make them pay for what they have done and also make them clean up the mess! That’s a big challenge because, as it stands right now, there’s no way for General Bishop to do anything. He also has other priorities, some dumped on him by UNEF Command.
UNEF Command is trying to build a human space Navy. They are doing this out at the FOB Jaguar which is at an unknown location behind a wormhole gate only Skippy can open. That’s not a real problem except every time something or someone needs to leave FOB Jaguar, the *Valkyrie* has to be there to open the wormhole. That’s going to be a big problem in the future when other human-manned starships start leaving the FOB to go on their own missions. So, Joe and Skippy need to figure out a way to open wormholes without Skippy needing to do it. They also need to make sure this method can’t be used by their numerous enemies.
At FOB Jaguar, Major General Ross is attempting to form a new Expeditionary Force that will be the new Alien Legion. With him is Colonel Emily Perkins, who originally created the Alien Legion on Paradise. She has come up with a plan that hopefully will result in Earth gaining some allies in the galaxy. That plan kind of starts out backwards since she wants to attack a planet held by the Ruhar. But this is only because that planet has a large, very large contingent of Verd-kris, the faction of the Kristang species that doesn’t like their military faction. These Verd-kris would very much like to be part of the new Alien Legion and have already fought alongside Colonel Perkins when she operated out of Paradise. So the problem now facing everyone is how to free these Verd-kris without terribly offending the Ruhar?
Meanwhile, General Bishop is looking for a way to hurt the Maxolhx. Skippy has found out that the Maxolhx have built and deployed a large number of near light-speed darts throughout the galaxy but mostly in the territory controlled by their enemy the Rindhalu. These were to be activated if or when the Rindhalu attacked any Maxolhx assets which hasn’t happened in thousands of years. So, Joe wanted Skippy to capture a bunch of these darts and use them to attack the Maxolhx. Of course Skippy said it was impossible since these darts were traveling so fast and not even he could catch up to them to change their programming. But, in the end, Joe and Skippy figure out how to do just that.
Next that pick a target, the planet Argathos, which happens to be an ultra-secret, highly protected research and weapons base for the Maxolhx. It is said to be impenetrable and especially so for the humans. Yet, Joe and Skippy manage to crack the planet almost in half to the stunned amazement of the Maxolhx.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t cause the Maxolhx to do anything about the cloud of gas they created in the Solar System. So, Joe decides more has to be done. Now you’ll read about some additional smart ideas Joe and Skippy come up with to really hurt the Maxolhx. And even more unfortunate, the Maxolhx aren’t just sitting there watching these upstart humans do what they are doing. They actually make an agreement with their arch-enemy, the Rindhalu to join forces against the humans.
Joe has not gotten the two most powerful alien species in the galaxy made at him and Skippy and the human race as a whole. They would have already destroyed Earth if it weren’t for the fact that Joe did control some Elder weapons. If Earth were destroyed, Joe would release these Elder weapons which would call the Sentinels and they would wipe out all living entities in the entire galaxy. No one wanted that, but these humans must learn their place in this galaxy run by the Maxolhx and the Rindhalu. Joe realized that all he had been doing was just making everyone madder than they initially were. He also had done some bluffing in a number of situations and Skippy had warned him that someday someone was going to call his bluff. Could Earth actually back up anything Joe said they could do? Maybe, maybe not!
I’m not sure what the title “Breakaway” has to do with this particular book, but it’s still a very interesting read. I’m looking forward to the next book (13), “Fallout”, now available on Amazon.
